High Street Passive House Cohousing

The High Street Cohousing project¬†aims to be NZs second Cohousing neighbourhood and the country’s first Passive House certified multi unit housing development. The project started in 2014 initiated by a small group of local people who thought that NZ could do better than endless subdivisions full of stand alone 4 bedroom/2 car garage houses.

The initial group purchased a property formerly occupied by High Street School and for the past 4 years they have been working with Architype and builders Ehaus to develop plans to create an affordable, sustainable and sociable cohousing neighbourhood.

The neighbourhood which is designed around a common central green space will include 24 homes of varying sizes. All houses are freehold unit titles and will have everything one would expect in a typical house, kitchen, dining, lounge, bathrooms and laundry facilities etc. however occupants will also have access to a range of shared facilities housed within the existing re purposed school building. Shared facilities include a dining room, commercial sized kitchen, workshop, laundry, guest rooms and social space and a bookable meeting rooms.

At present the project has been lodged for building consent and the group is working through the final financial details before a contract is signed with the builder.
